Panel Upgrade for an EV Charger in Severna Park, MD

A panel upgrade for an EV charger in Severna Park is needed when a load calculation shows your panel or service cannot carry the new circuit. Options range from load management to a 200 A service upgrade, which involves BGE. Angi lists a typical range of $800 to $4,000+ for upgrading to 200 amps.

Who This Is For

A panel upgrade is a bigger job, so check whether it fits your situation.

  • Your home has 100 A service, or a load calculation shows little spare capacity.
  • Your panel has no open breaker spaces for a 240-volt circuit.
  • You plan to add a heat pump, hot tub or second EV in the coming years.
  • Your panel is an older model that your electrician flags as a concern.
  • You manage a shop or office that needs more capacity; see commercial and workplace charging. Condo owners should read our condo and HOA guide.

What the Job Includes

A panel or service upgrade has more parts than a charger install. A typical scope includes:

  • A load calculation under NEC Article 220 based on your actual appliances.
  • A new panel and, when needed, a new meter base and service conductors.
  • Coordination with BGE when the service itself changes.
  • Grounding and bonding brought up to current county requirements.
  • Labeling, the permit, the inspection and power restoration.
  • Often, the EV charger circuit as part of the same project.

The process

How It Works, Step by Step

  1. Step 1: Call and Describe Your Panel

Snap a photo of the panel label and note the size of your main breaker before the call.

  2. Step 2: Load Calculation and Options

A licensed electrician looks over your panel and runs a load calculation. You get a written quote that compares load management with a full upgrade.

  3. Step 3: Permit and Utility Planning

Your electrician files the county permit. If the service size changes, the electrician also plans the BGE side of the work.

  4. Step 4: Swap the Panel and Add the Circuit

Power goes off while the panel is replaced. Ask your electrician what to expect for the outage.

  5. Step 5: Inspection and Power Restored

A county inspector checks the upgrade, and power comes back on after the required approvals.

Cost

What Affects the Price?

Upgrade prices vary widely. These factors shape the number, and our installation cost guide adds more context.

Panel Only vs Full Service

Replacing only the panel costs less than also changing the meter base and service conductors.

Utility Work

A service upgrade involves BGE, and that part of the work can affect scheduling and cost.

Emergency Disconnect

When service equipment changes, county amendments may call for an outdoor emergency disconnect. Your electrician will tell you if it applies.

Grounding Updates

Older grounding may need work to meet current code during an upgrade.

Load Management Instead

A load management device or smart charger can cost far less than a new service.

Check the rebate page to see what may help with the charger side of the project. Ask MEA which costs count before you assume panel work is covered.

What Code and Permit Rules Apply to Panel Upgrades?

As of October 2026

The county applies the 2020 NEC as of October 2026. NEC Article 220 sets the load calculation method, and Article 625 covers the EV charger itself. The charger circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's continuous current, so the calculation must count that full load.

Anne Arundel County adds its own local amendments to the NEC. One calls for an outdoor emergency disconnect, labeled 'EMERGENCY DISCONNECT,' on or within sight of one- and two-family dwellings. It can matter when service equipment changes, and the electrician on your job can say whether it applies to you.

A licensed electrician applies for the permit on the Land Use Navigator, and a county inspector checks the upgrade before the job closes. Our permit guide has more detail on each stage.

Why Do Some Severna Park Homes Need More Capacity?

Many Severna Park homes went up in the 1960s to 1980s. Some of them may have 100 A service or a crowded panel sized before central air, heat pumps and EVs.

Homes along the Magothy and Severn shorelines sometimes add pool pumps, boat lifts or dock power.

BGE serves much of Anne Arundel County, and your bill shows which utility serves you. Homeowners on the Broadneck Peninsula in Arnold often weigh the same choices.

Can Load Management Replace a Panel Upgrade?

Sometimes it can. A load management device watches your home's total draw and lowers the charger's current when other appliances run. Many smart chargers can do this, and power-sharing units split one circuit between two cars. The NEC allows this approach when the equipment is listed for it.

These options often cost less than a new service. The tradeoff is slower charging at busy times, which may not matter if you charge overnight. An EV readiness inspection can show which path fits.

Questions

How Much Does a 200 Amp Panel Upgrade Cost?

Angi lists a typical range of $800 to $4,000+ for upgrading to 200 amps. Meter base work, utility coordination and grounding updates can push the price higher.

Do I Need a Panel Upgrade for an EV Charger?

Not always, and a load calculation decides. Many homes with 200 A service have room, and some 100 A homes can use a smaller charger or load management.

Does BGE Need to Be Involved?

BGE is involved when the service size changes. Your electrician explains what that means for your job and plans around it.

Is an Emergency Disconnect Required?

It can be. Anne Arundel County's amendments call for an outdoor emergency disconnect on one- and two-family dwellings, which may come up when service equipment changes. Ask your electrician whether your project triggers it.
